Kaiser Health News is a nonprofit health news organization funded by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The news service was founded in 2008 and formally launched in June 2009. It has a full-time staff of 15 journalists and launched with a budget of about $2 million, with plans to increase that amount to about $4 million. Wall Street Journal veteran Laura McGinley is the executive editor.

KHN accepts no advertising and provides its coverage for free to news outlets and through its website. It has partnered with organizations like The Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer and McClatchy. Kaiser Health News specializes in in-depth health coverage, rather than breaking news or analysis. The organization also produces roundups of health care news throughout the industry called “Daily Reports.”

The Kaiser Family Foundation is independent from the health care giant Kaiser Permanente, but both were founded by Henry Kaiser. The confusion between the two organizations has raised ethical questions, though Kaiser Health News is not affiliated with Kaiser Permanente.
