nytimes-logoAdd “getting a pumpkin spice latte” to the list of ways to get free access to New York Times stories. The newspaper is offering readers 15 free stories a day if they’re on Starbucks wifi. The two companies announced today that readers would be able access the stories through the Starbucks Digital Network. SDN, which launched in 2010, assembles news from companies including Yahoo, USA Today, and the Times for coffee sippers.

The Times previously offered free access to Times Reader (its Adobe AIR app) via SDN, but the Times’ press release notes, interestingly, that the new service will be a “new web-based, cross-platform solution [that] utilizes a responsive design optimized for desktops, tablets and smartphones.” Sounds like it might be a sibling to the Times HTML5 app that debuted last fall.

The media becomes an activist for democracy
“We cannot be neutral about this, by definition. A free press that doesn’t agitate for democracy is an oxymoron.”
Embracing influencers as allies
“News organizations will increasingly rely on digital creators not just as amplifiers but as integral partners in storytelling.”
Action over analysis
“We’ve overindexed on problem articulation, to the point of problem admiring. The risk is that we are analyzing ourselves into inaction and irrelevance.”
