The Austin American-Statesman is a daily newspaper in Austin, Texas.

The Statesman was founded in 1871 is owned by Atlanta-based Cox Enterprises, which bought the paper in 1976. Cox attempted to sell the paper in 2008 and 2009, but took the paper off the market when offers were far less than what the company had expected.

The Statesman launched a paywall in 2013, with content beyond each story’s first two paragraphs limited to subscribers. The pay plan included 99-cent day passes.

In 2010, the Statesman bought In Fact Daily, a local political site.

The Statesman has been one of the United States’ leading newspapers in using Twitter to connect with readers and break news. The paper was also among the first to experiment with advertiser-sponsored tweets.

The Statesman began collaborating in 2010 with the location-based social media network Gowalla, an Austin-based startup, to create tours of local attractions based on Statesman content.

In January 2010, the Statesman launched PolitiFact Texas in conjunction with the St. Petersburg Times.
