Gotham Gazette is an nonprofit online news organization that covers city and state government in New York City.
The Gazette was founded in 1999 by the Citizens Union Foundation, making it one of the nation’s oldest local online-only startups. It receives funding through advertising and various foundations and donations, and has a full-time staff of four.
The Gazette has been noted for its innovation in several areas of online journalism. It has won several online news awards and is the only organization to win two Knight News Challenge grants — one in 2007 for games that illustrate policy issues and another in 2009 for a city government wiki called Councilpedia. The site has also long maintained a database of all New York City laws and resolutions since 2002.
