Grist is an American online magazine that focuses on environmental issues.
The magazine says it provides reporting and commentary “with a wry twist,” and has covered issues like energy, food, and agriculture, climate change and city planning. According to the magazine they have over 900,000 monthly pageviews and 500,000 monthly unique visitors.
In recent years the company has experimented with new methods of storytelling and delivering information, including the Earth Confessions site and Grist Labs, which works on new ways of using technology to deliver information about environmental issues.
The magazine, based in Seattle, operates as a nonprofit and relies on foundation funding from organizations such as the Ford Foundation and Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation as well as advertising, sponsorships and support from readers.
The magazine has tried to be creative in its fundraising appeals to readers. In 2009 they released videos indicating the staff would be locked in their offices until readers donated $50,000. In 2010 they produced a series of “Save our Journalists” videos.
