Neighborlogs is a blogging platform for neighborhood-level news sites.

Neighborlogs, a for-profit venture owned by the Seattle company Instivate, was launched in 2007 by Scott Durham. About 70 online-only news sites use its free platform as of March 2010. The site is currently in private beta.

The Neighborlogs platform lets local publishers sell ads at their own rates with a tool called InstiAds. Instivate takes a 20-percent cut for all ads sold. Neighborlogs sites also share revenue from the Seattle Indie Advertising Network.

Neighborlogs’ largest site is Capitol Hill Seattle, which moved to the Neighborlogs platform in 2008 and won a Society for Professional Journalists award in May 2010. Capitol Hill Seattle is run by Neighborlogs vice president Justin Carder, but anyone can post content to the blog.

Four Neighborlogs sites collaborate with the Seattle Times as part of the paper’s hyperlocal news partnership.

Neighborlogs has also created a SeattleCrime iPhone app and an iPhone app for its local culture site, The SunBreak.

It typically pays authors a low sum of money for these posts, often about $15 per contribution, and assigns posts only when it believes…
