Next Door Media is a network of neighborhood-level news sites in Seattle.
Next Door Media was founded in 2007 by local television journalists Cory and Kate Bergman as the hyperlocal blog My Ballard. The site added the blog PhinneyWood in early 2008 and by 2010 had expanded to include 10 sites covering north Seattle neighborhoods. The company said combined web traffic grew 37% in 2010, serving 13.3 million page views for the year.
The company has two full-time staff members, and each of its sites is run by a freelance journalist who works on contract with Next Door Media, splitting revenue with the company. The network’s revenue comes from local display, coupon, and email advertising, and it has not taken investment funding.
Next Door Media partners with the University of Washington to produce its site U District Daily.
In summer 2010, Next Door Media launched North Seattle Guide, a central site that aggregates news and events from each of the network’s blogs, with neighborhood guides and a coupon site.
The company’s sites have won a Sigma Delta Chi award and Online Journalism Award for their reporting.
