“As far as its media operations are concerned, Emerson Collective looks much more like a venture capital firm with a significant corporate-giving program than a charity with a sideline in private equity. Staff at Emerson like to say that a billionaire is not a business strategy [and] when making investments in for-profit media, Emerson has a keen focus: ‘sustainable business models that help high-quality journalism thrive.’ The outlets, in other words, are expected to make money.”
