From nasal New York accents to vocal fry, NPR’s anchors and reporters have long inflamed debates about whose voices should represent the nation — or just be heard by it.
Up First, available starting Wednesday, will be a 10-minute weekday morning news podcast built off the top news from NPR’s most-listened-to radio show.
Plus: Radiotopia finds expanding a donor base a different challenge than starting one, NPR refocuses for innovation, and The New York Times reaches its youngest audience ever with podcasts.
“The news can be pretty divisive, especially in an election year like the one we’re having now. So how do you create spaces where people can find some common ground?”
Kelly McEvers: “A lot of the great storytelling podcasts happen in the studio. I hope ours opens the door to people thinking more about what you can do in the field, when things don’t go as planned and are unexpected.”
