“We are…deeply worried that despite this partnership, OpenAI may be downplaying rather than elevating our works,” Business Insider’s union wrote in a letter to management.
The New York Times, BuzzFeed, HuffPost, El País, and others have all retrenched from the country in various ways recently. But Business Insider sees potential in reaching younger, upwardly mobile Mexicans.
Part of Handelsblatt Global’s strategy is trying to be ruthlessly practical about its position in the market: “If you get an American reader, nobody would ever switch from The New York Times for us.”
A new study from the Reuters Institute examines the strengths and weaknesses of seven globally ambitious news companies — Brut, Business Insider, De Correspondent, HuffPost, Mashable, Quartz, and Vice.
“We are working in a medium, along with all of the other digital folks, in which you can tell stories in four different ways: words, pictures, video, audio. All of those will continue to grow for the next several decades. It’s not either/or.”
Vice is only the latest American or British publisher to seek out an Indian partner — in its case the Times Group — for reasons that combine local knowledge and legal restrictions.
