New Naratif, modeled loosely on the successful Dutch site De Correspondent, has started a crowdfunding campaign with the goal of signing up 3,500 members.
“As the company succeeds, so would those people. It actually buys in folks to the mission and success of the company rather than a specific project where you get a reward.”
“We’re a news site so we need to cover these things, but there’s not a lot of money to do everything. So we thought, maybe we could help solve this by using one of the main resources we have — our readers.”
Berkeleyside, while a successful local news site, still doesn’t feel like it’s nailed the formula for sustainability. It’s latest effort: convincing its readers to invest — literally — in its future.
“We have a potential of six million readers. You may not convince all six million people to be your socios, but if you learn more about their interests, you can get closer.”
