With a new grant from Knight, the nonprofit organizations are working to improve their customer management systems and better integrate membership data into their websites.
Five journalism professors from historically black colleges and universities will participate in a program also aimed at increasing newsroom diversity.
Knight, along with the Mozilla and Ford foundations, will award $2.75 million for ideas that can “strengthen the Internet for free expression and innovation.”
