The British paper says subscriptions and traffic are up, even though it shuttered an app aimed at an international audience.
The $4-a-month app, which launched in January, was an attempt to reach readers outside the U.K. and find a new revenue stream outside The Times’ usual strict paywall.
The papers are behind a hard paywall, and their platforms will be updated four times each day to correspond with peaks in readership.
“We’re pursuing the idea of editions everywhere. An edition is something that can be finished. When you’ve read it, you feel up-to-date; you’ve been told what you need to know for the day or the week.”

The Times’ effort to give readers a free taste of its opinion pieces wasn’t generating enough of an impact on paid subscriptions to be worthwhile. Linda Kinstler
