After nine years, Joel Kramer reflects on the state of the site he cofounded with his wife Laurie and looks forward to its next era under new leadership.
The news site that uses academics as reporters and journalists as editors now boasts 19 paying member universities and is opening up posts in Atlanta (and maybe in the Bay Area).
“People see us as a pantheon of good American journalism,” founder and chairman Neil Barsky said. “But we’ll still be fundraising for the rest of our professional lives.”
The new nonprofit news site has raised almost $3 million for explanatory reporting on state government and lawmaking. They’ve also been gathering advice — and advisors — from places like ProPublica and The Texas Tribune.
St. Louis Public Radio and the St. Louis Beacon joined forces last December. Now, after a summer covering the protests in Ferguson, the combined newsroom is hitting its stride.
