Data-driven news stories produced by members of the European Data Journalism Network are translated into English, French, German, Italian, Polish, and Spanish and then made available for free to all partner and non-partner news organizations.
Cafébabel’s articles — all of which are available in multiple languages — inhabit a Europe where Italians might care about a climate policy issue in Portugal or Spaniards might be interested in an up-and-coming artist from Switzerland.
“It wasn’t only about launching the new teams itself…The way we are launching new services impacts in a very big editorial way how we’re running existing ones.”
That includes translating political explainers as “part of our attempt to reach new readers who are interested in American politics — but perhaps don’t speak English or understand how American government works.”
Sixty-two percent of Hispanic-American adults are bilingual, and as more young people come to prefer reading in English, the paper is being forced to adapt.
